Introducing the blogger!
My name is Dung Le and I am a student at FIDM on the San Diego campus. I am majoring in Fashion Merchandise Marketing and I love every bit of it so far. I think gaining knowledge of the history of fashion and fashion designers are mandatory to have a successful career in the industry. Fashion always repeats itself and is reintroduced in innovative and exciting new ways each season. So without the past, fashion would have no future.
It is crucial to know about fashion and designer's history for my career choice because these are the people who gave fashion a name one way or another. I have already learned a lot from their success and failures and I have applied it to my work ethics. My career choice is to have my own clothing line and manage my own retail store. Fashion is not just about clothes or accessories, it is a business. Fashion is involved with marketing, financing, branding, communications, and so much more. To learn about how previous designer's manage their company and brand is essential so that I can adapt to it and make it into something that is my own.
Not only is fashion a business, to me it is also an art. Iconic designers like Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, and many more pushed the boundaries of what "fashion" is regardless of what others thought. They always went with their gut instincts and created clothing that was shocking, different, but stunning none the less. If the history of fashion has taught me anything so far, it is to not be afraid of what others say or think. A designer always comes out with new creations that shock the world every decade and those designs ended up being the transition for the next decade, where the original designs now do not seem so shocking. If designers back them were to be too timid to create the garments they believe in, then we may still be in knee length gowns with bustles underneath our clothes and bonnets on our head.
I grew up constantly trying to find myself. I tried going towards different careers but fashion always pulled me back. I thought that fashion was not a professional business to go into and it would be hard to be successful in the field so I never took the risk. Then one day, literally, I realized that the reason why fashion kept coming back to me was because it is the career that is meant for me. All of a sudden, it made sense why I was the only third grader who wore lipstick and always made sure my clothes matched. I have been making my own sketches of clothes since sixth grade, and even got the chance to be one of the first high school students in 2011 to present a garment at Scottsdale's Fashion Week in Arizona. For my Senior project in high school, I produced and hosted a fashion show along with other classmates for a cause and raised over $500 for the Arbor Day Foundation. With such a positive feedback from family, friends, teachers, students and parents, I decided to take the risk of moving to California to attend FIDM and by far, it is the best risk I have ever taken. I was also encouraged to take risks because the past designer's risk that they took, landed them as icons in the fashion industry. To receive something you have never had, you must do what you have never done.
The history of fashion and its designers really inspire me because it has always been a major impact in our lives, whether some notice it or not. Fashion fuses all the events that are occurring whether it be political, technological, or cultural and the results are not just an outfit, but a statement of that moment in time. The five designers I chose for my designer project is Roberto Capucci, Yohji Yamamoto, Marc Jacobs, Philip Lim, and Alexander McQueen. Not only did I choose them because they have each made a huge impact in fashion history, but also their designs and work ethics have inspired me as well. Their creations have left an influence on the fashion industry in one way or another and we can still see these influences on the latest runway show or even on the street today.
